2009 rides   Listed with most recent at the top.  This is not all of the rides, as I have missed reporting on some.  If you came with us and want your info and photos and quotes on there, please email us and we will get it there soon.  The all day rides include hamburgers cooked on the trail, plus water and snacks, and are able to get further back into the mountains and we typically go 10-12 miles, about 4-5 hours in the saddle.  We take frequent "stretch your legs" breaks.  The half day rides are still very scenic, but obviously don't go as far and you are in the saddle about 3 hours.  We also provide water and snacks such as granola bars and potato chips.  Some of the pics below are "thumbnails" and if you click on them they will expand to full size.

Aug 28:  A long all day ride with the family of Mark, Barbara, Matt, and Carolyn from Massachusetts and a cowboy-type couple, Rick and Gretchen from Colorado. Gretchen and Rick take kids on trail rides and Rick breaks horses and "trains people how to manage their horse".  Had a long day but a great ride.  We saw a couple of mountain goats, had lunch in Big Basin which was a very long steep climb for the horses, and we saw some bear tracks which may be grizzly tracks, very unusual for this area.  Carolyn got a touch of altitude sickness but soon got over it.

August 19: All day ride with Carrie and 7 year old Olivia from St. Croix Island in the Virgin Islands.  Had a great ride, beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, and even saw a Rubber Boa snake, which is very unusual.  That is only the 5th one of them I have seen in the 25 years I have lived here.  Click here to see a video of our beautiful lunch spot. Click here to see a video of Jonesy showing the Rubber Boa.  Click on the pics to enlarge them.

August 18: Keith, Pam, Sam, and Lucas on a half day ride with Jonesy.  Had a great time, got up into some really beautiful scenery.  Did a little slow galloping which the boys enjoyed immensely.

August 17: The Anderson family, Gary, Doreen, Shannon, Brandon, Matt had a good half-day ride with Jonesy.  They hadn't been on horses much, so their trusty mounts, Pal, Captain, Candy, Snickers, and Trey treated them well.  We had a great time.

August 15: Keith and Kim from Wyoming and Kevin and Karen from Texas had a great half-day ride in cool weather with Jonesy.  We saw a mountain goat--a white billy-goat--which just layed on a ledge of rock above us and watched us while we enjoyed a granola bar.  We also saw a moose.  Had a great time.

August 10:  Steig, Renee', Conner, and Evan from Virginia on an all day ride with Jonesy.  "We arrived city-slickers and left cowboys.  The boys are worn out and I didn't think that was possible." Jonesy note:  They may have been worn out but I had to pry them off the horses, they just didn't want to quit.  Had a great time.

August 8:  Where do you go on your day off?   Colleen and Jonesy went to our office.  We sat at our desks all day.  Her desk was Captain, mine was Snickers.  We went to another wing of our office, one where we hadn't been before. Enjoyed the day immensely!!  A couple of good friends, Craig Knecht of Star Valley and Randy Snow from Virginia, and 4 fine horses in terrain that is as close to Heaven as you can get.  We rode up above Cottonwood Lake, south of Afton and east of Smoot.  Went up the trail to Mount Wagner, a place I have never been even though I've lived within 15 miles of it for 25 years. We paused to do a little snow skiing. Maggie, our four-footed assistant, did a little snow skiing of her own. At one point I had to consult with Craig's horse, Thunder, about the trails.  He seemed to think we should turn right and I wanted to go left.  We got out the map, carefully looked at the little dotted lines on it, and Thunder was right; Wagner Lake was just another half mile on the right fork.  As Thunder said, "When you get to a fork in the trail, take it." Randy Snow and I climbed to the top of 10,709 foot Mount Wagner. The view from there was spectacular! We left Colleen and Craig down between the two lakes. All-in-all it was one incredible day!! I LOVE MY OFFICE!!  Craig and I were commenting that even though we have been up in this high timberline country a thousand times, we just can't get enough of it.  We NEVER get tired of looking at it.  It is just hard to describe the feeling you get when you are at 10,000 feet on a good horse and lush meadows and heavy timber and craggy peaks are all around you.  Simply a heavenly day at the office on my day off! Thanks Colleen and Randy and Craig and our Great Creator for a very special day. Jonesy

August 5:  All day ride with Rodney and his 14 year old daughter, Brie, from Oklahoma.  We went where Jonesy had never been before, so basically we were lost.  But what a place to get lost!  Jonesy and guests had a great day at the office, in spite of Jonesy getting stepped on by a horse just before I went.  I was going to amputate the foot but decided to leave it on.  The ungrateful foot complained all day even though I exercised it often by climbing a "you gotta be kidding me" mountain and I stuffed it into a leather boot to protect what was left of it.  I even soaked it in the cold creek for a few minutes, er... seconds (ice-cold creek).  By the end of the day it was resigned to its fate and gave me a few minutes of peace, occasionally.  Note the view out our kitchen window. We had a great time throwing cone-flowers at each other.  Had a lot of fun with some great guests!  "Jonesy, Thank you so much for a great and very memorable day.  I couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience for Brie and I.  Exploring that new trail was awesome and the view in the Lupine field of wonder was wonderful not to mention the smell.  I hope your foot gets better soon and thanks again for guiding us on a memory of a lifetime.  Thanks,  Rodney"

August 3:  Bob and Sarah from Texas all day ride guided by Jonesy.  They rode with us last year and came back for another ride to a different area.  We took a trail Jonesy had never been on to get to Big Basin where Jonesy had been before.  Sarah kept saying, "Oh my gosh! Holy Moly! Oh my gosh! No one would believe this. Oh my gosh!"  I heard "Oh my gosh!" or "Holy Moly!" at least 100 times.  I think she was impressed with the scenery.  Unfortunately I wasn't familiar with my borrowed camera (mine broke) and didn't take great photos and the date stamp was wrong.  March 1, 2008 there was probably 10 feet of snow right where we were riding.  This ride took place on August 3, 2009.  However, no camera can ever do justice to the scenery surrounding us.  Click here for video.  Click on the thumbnail photo for full size.

July 31 half day: Hedlund family from all over the country.  Aaron and Jonesy took nine of them on a great ride.  All had a good time, including "Wati" who rode our big paint mare, Candy.  Note the cute picture of young Lana getting mugged by Shadow for a piece of her granola bar. (please ignore the date stamp on the pic; I had to borrow the camera and the setup was wrong).

July 22 half day:  The Ahearn family took a nice ride, very experienced riders so they got to do some galloping. click here for video.  We allow trotting or a slow gallop/canter on occasion. This gallop was a bit fast, but very experienced riders.  We are cautious with this, as often we are a long way from phone service and medical help.

July 20 Supreme Adventure Ride: Jonesy took guests Annette from Denmark, her sister Lisa from Chicago, guests Staley and his Daughter Allison from North Carolina, and friend Cole on this Supreme Adventure Ride.  We covered about 20 miles from 8 AM to 7 PM in some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet.  It is still early spring in those mountains and several times we skirted snowbanks on the trail.  Incredible ride if you can join us some time.

July 18: "The Boardroom Group", twelve guys--John, Steve, Jack, Dave, Jake, Hammy, Chris, Brad, Tucker, Mike, Delly, and Dan-- took a half day ride with Jonesy, Aaron, and Caleb as guides.  Had a GREAT time!  Click here for video of them crossing a stream.

July 17: Bill, Adele, and Annamaria Traverso came back for another all day trail ride.  They took one Tuesday, then this one Friday.  My thirteen year old granddaughter, Rae Fullmer, went with us.  The night before she had a major wreck on a horse.  Rae and "Lady" were rounding the third barrel at Barrel Club barrel racing and Lady tripped and fell on Rae, then as Lady scrambled to get up she stepped all over Rae.  The onlookers feared the worst as they rushed Rae to the Emergency Room for x-rays.  By the grace of God Rae just had a badly bruised thigh.  It could have been very very serious. Rae was lamenting to her mother that the Doctor wouldn't let her go on the ride with Grandpa Jonesy.  When Grandpa Jonesy heard about it he went over and told Rae and her mother that they had to "Cowgirl Up" and be tough.  So Rae went on the ride.  The leg was sore, but manageable.  Rae and Annamaria hit it off really good.  Two fun girls on a ride made for a really fun ride on a challenging trail.  I think you can see by the pics that Annamarie really loves Shadow.  Shadow likes taking her better than taking me, because Annamaria weighs about 100 pounds less than Jonesy.  Click here for short video.

July 14:  Traverso family, Bill, Adele, Annamaria (age 9).  Great ride with these good friends of ours from the Seattle area.  Annamaria just loves Shadow, almost as much as I, Jonesy, do.  Great ride, as usual!  Annamaria must have said, at least 400 times, "let's canter".  We did, several times, but she just couldn't get enough of it.  This is the first ride with them that I've untied Shadow from the back of the horse I was riding and let Annamaria ride "on her own".  She is growing up!

July 10: Heaton family from Arizona, a special evening ride for relatives of Jonesy.  Moms, Dads, big kids, little kids, a whole bunch of them.  Had a great time and a great ride.  "This is the best horseback ride I have ever been on!"

July 8: Borron family.  Josh and Caleb guided the five of them; Everett, Colleen, Brittany, Marina, Faith.  Had a great ride and a good time in incredible scenery. Read their report, but be sure and read to the last paragraph.

"Hello Jonesy,  Just a quick note to thank you and your staff (Josh and Caleb), for making our vacation a most delightful experience; a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be more accurate. But I'm afraid that 5 hours on a horse after 30 years since any previous experience was pushing the limits of an old man's body.  I will say it was most enlightening to discover parts of my body that were previously unknown to me. And I now know the thrill of saddle sores that I once dismissed as mythology.  The elbow and ankle are healing nicely.  The black eye is beginning to fade and should be completely back to normal by next month.  The doctors all agree that I should be able to keep solid food down soon so the feeding tube should be out by this weekend. (removed the ventilator a couple of days ago, as soon as I was out of the coma.) The rabies test was negative, but I'm afraid that gangrene set in near the snakebite and the surgeons are split on whether or not to amputate.  They put a bright yellow and blue cast on my leg  (to cheer me up I suppose), and they will take me to speech therapy after the tongue swelling goes down.  The burns weren't severe enough to require more than a few skin grafts and I've learned that you only need 3 toes on one foot to maintain balance. Fortunately , I was able to recover from the food poisoning rather quickly with little lingering effects, although next time I will bring a book on preparing centipedes and grubs for consumption.  So..to sum up, by this time next year I should healed up enough to be able to book another trip with you and repeat the experience...(if I don't kill myself before then).  If you have a wild stallion in your stable about that time, I would really like to take it out and get a "real" western adventure. Do you know of any hostile Indian encampments in the area?  I am going to ask for bullwhip lessons for Christmas so I'll be all set for anything you have!  In all seriousness, Jonesy, it was a most wonderful adventure for my entire family, My girlfriend, daughter and granddaughters and I were treated to a real gift, one that will be remembered long and with much pleasure. Josh and Caleb couldn't have been better hosts and representatives for your operation. (I think my eldest granddaughter has a bit of a crush on Josh). Be assured that I will give kudos and recommend Wydaho Outfitters whenever the occasion arises. And should I show up for another all-day ride, please shoot me on the spot. Thanks again..it was wonderful! Everett Borron, Colleen Donovan, Faith Borron, Brittany Dazy, Marina Dazy"

July 7: Florence family, Mike, Rachel, Rachelle, Matthew, Savanna, and Shayla had a really fun ride.  These kids were a blast to have along. Jonesy and Aaron guided them.  Little 5 year old Shayla started out riding with Dad, then on her own horse, including Jonesy's guide horse, Ranger.  Ranger can be really tough to ride, but he was a perfect kid's horse for Shayla.  Jonesy led Ranger for a while, then unclipped the rope at Shayla's insistence and she rode it by herself.

July 1: Coogan family, all 16 of them on a half day ride, guided by Jonesy, Matt, Aaron, and Caleb.  Got rained on for about 15 minutes, but beautiful weather otherwise.  A couple of the young girls weren't sure they liked to ride a horse, but by the time we got back they were comfortable with it.

June 27:  All day ride.  Steve and Kerry from Colorado and Mark, Elaine, Shelby, and Harrison from Illinois had an incredibly beautiful ride.  Weather was just gorgeous and the scenery spectacular. View short video by clicking here. We had an unusual thing happen:  A mama Ruffed grouse challenged us, as she was protecting her newly hatched chicks.  She really threatened us, standing on a log just 6 feet away and hissing and puffing up her feathers.  Quite a protective mother!  Harrison had never been on a horse, so we put him on a horse that had never been ridden (just kidding).  He took to riding like a duck to water, enjoying several gallops before the end of the ride. "Colleen & Jonesy: Again, thanks for the fun & safe horseback trip and delicious mountain burgers.  Kerry and I did a yurt trip in north-central Colorado this past weekend and showcased your mountain burger technique with some friends...a big hit!  We rode 10.93 miles, total trip, with you and gained 2,400 feet elevation before turning around.  Thanks again. We'll recommend you in the future.  Steve Schweitzer, The Global Fly Fisher, www.globalflyfisher.com

June 26: Half day ride. Troy, Melody, and Tom from North Dakota and Sal, Melinda, Sal Jr., Anthony, and Michel from Texas were real troupers, riding in the rain.  It was raining when they arrived and I suggested they wait a couple of hours for the weather to break.  They decided to go in the rain so we got rain slickers and started out from the trailhead.  It rained steadily for two hours, then dripped for another hour.  It finally broke just about the time we arrived back at the truck.  In spite of that they had a great ride and had a lot of fun. There was no whining in spite of cold and wet.

June 24: All day ride.  Derek, Shannon, Lexie, Shane from Michigan.  We had a great time, great conversation, good time had by all.  Derek and Jonesy took a side trip up a very steep trail to "check it out" while the wife and kids patiently waited.

June 22: Half day ride.  Tim and Libby from Kansas.  Had a beautiful ride with beautiful weather.  Saw some elk with calves. Also saw a bunch of pelicans at close range out the truck window.  We have an infestation of pelicans on Palisades Lake and surrounding streams.  They have destroyed the fishing in the area.  Don't ask me how pelicans got clear to Wyoming, but we wish we could get rid of this federally protected pest. June 20: Half day ride. The Johnson Family from Los Angeles, Roger, Denise, 8 year old Sydney, and 6 year old Casey had a great ride, beautiful weather, Jonesy as guide.  Roger is with the mounted police in Los Angeles.  All the family were expert riders, including the kids.  We took several slow gallops and the kids enjoyed it immensely!  I took a short video as well as lots of pictures.  See the video by clicking here.

June 16:  All day ride.  Jonesy took Jean and her daughter Ashley, and Ann and her daughter Erica on a good ride.  Nice weather.  Saw lots of elk.  They came with us rather than with another outfit because "your brochure said we can do a little galloping", which we did.  Comments:  "After this ride, anything else will be boring."  "This is way better than I thought it would be."

June 10:  All day ride. Stewart and Bonnie went on a trailride with Jonesy and it rained most of the day, or all of the day.  However, we found a really nice dry tree to have lunch under and built a good fire.  We saw several elk today, some at very close range, including two bulls which are growing their antlers.  We also heard an elk bugle, very unusual for June.  Very rainy day with LOTS of mud, some places very deep mud.  The ground is saturated so the wildflowers will be incredible this year.

June 8: Nancy and Alice came for a ride and had quite an experience.  First, it rained and rained and rained and hailed and rained.  We had a little sunshine late in the day, but most of the day it rained and we still enjoyed being in the mountains.  We had good rain slickers for them.  Second, we were trying out a new horse (with Apprentice Guide Josh riding it) and it ended up being a total idiot.  Beautiful palomino but lousy riding.  Just totally spoiled, it wouldn't go where it was supposed to, laid down several times on the saddle and with Josh on it, and was just basically an idiot.  Josh finally had to lead it down the trail three miles in sloppy mud to the truck and as soon as we got back to the stable we took the horse back to the guy who was going to lease it to us. We own most of the horse and have leased horses from the same guy for 15 years so we might as well own them (we use the same horses all summer, he feeds them all winter--a good deal for us).  He had just acquired this horse and, unfortunately, it just didn't work out.

June 5:  Cher from Alaska. “Jonesy, our ride was the best I have ever experienced and that is really saying a lot since I pretty much grew up on horseback.  I've never paid to ride a horse before and it was worth every penny!  Your experience and your wonderful mountain horses, all of your knowledge and your cowboy ways and poems made for an experience I will never, ever forget.  The great thunder storms and going up that steep ridge holding on to Shilo’s tail, seeing the elk (what majestic creatures they are), and the views from up in your mountains was so exciting; I’ve just never experienced anything quite so wonderful.  You are truly perfect as a guide and it was a privilege to ride with you.  Ranger, Shilo and Ebony are some of the finest horses I’ve seen, as with all of your stock.  I’m very impressed.  Thank you again for the experience of my lifetime.   I am 59 and this was the most wonderful ride of my life!  Feel free to use any of my comments.  I feel that we became friends up in those mountains and hope you feel the same.  I will tell anyone and everyone who will listen; whoever is interested, all about you and send them to you if I can.   I will let people know they need look no further than Wydaho Outfitters.  Once again thank you sincerely for your prayer; it was certainly answered in every way.  I arrived home safe and sound and incredibly happy, wishing I was still there in Alpine; my trip was altogether too short.  Cher

June 2:  Frank Stokes and wife and daughter Alex came on a rainy day and had a nice ride.  Saw some elk.  They own about 50 horses and Frank said that is the first time in his life he ever paid for riding a horse, but that is the best way to see our beautiful mountains.   JHRecreation/StokesFamily1.JPG

May 30: Jim and Diona Davis took a day ride which was cut a bit short because of JiJHRecreation/Davis6.JPGm's injury.  Got bucked off a horse.  NO!  It was not our horse and not on our ride!  He came with his arm in a sling; broken shoulder blade and 4 broken ribs.    It happened before their trip to Wyoming.  He had some pain medicine and toughed it out, but it was hard getting on and off the horse.  Beautiful weather.  "Colleen,
We spent May 28th with you on the trail for quite the experience.  It was more impressing that you were so accommodating for my husband who was thrown from a horse and rode with you all with 4 broken ribs.  It was great how much you were there to help him and all.  It is quite remarkable that you were so willing to let us ride despite it all."  Diona

May 29: Albert, Hal, Travis, Cole, and Jonathan from Louisiana came riding and we had a great time!  We made our own trail part of the time, "bushwhacking".  They were a fun bunch of guys to ride with.  They came on an unguided ride the previous week, then came back and did the half-day guided ride.  Their comment; "This guided ride is WAY better than the unguided ride!"

May 27;  Barry, from Reno, Nevada came by himself and we had a really good ride.  Barry is a CPA for a company in Reno that makes slot machines.  He just needed some personal vacation time. He took the pictures of Jonesy playing with our outfit's mascot, Maggie.

May 26:  Ron, Teresa, Matt, Holly, and Joe Geisselmann had a really fun half-day horse ride.  They even saw a moose! Then the boys came back the next day and rode the 4-wheel ATVs.  JHRecreation/geiselmann2.JPG JHRecreation/geiselmann7.JPGJHRecreation/Geiselmann1.JPG  JHRecreation/geiselmann3.JPG  JHRecreation/geiselmann6.JPG  JHRecreation/geiselmann9.JPG  JHRecreation/geiselmann4.JPG
Hey Jonesy,
We are back in Nebraska (and have to say it's looking a little bland) after our great and memorable vacation to your beautiful state.  Every time we are on our way home from a vacation, Ron asks all of the kids what their favorite part of vacation was.  The unanimous answer was, "The horseback riding."  We were all so impressed with your hospitality and service, and the breathtaking beauty of the trail ride.  It was like nothing else we have ever done on a vacation.  Joe was happy as a clam that you didn't mind him breaking into a canter once in a while, because most trail rides prohibit that and it's something he loves to do and has done with our own horse.  And no matter what Josh says, we all were very entertained by the occasional stop for some cowboy poetry. In fact, I wish we could get ahold of the ones you recited on the trail. I even bought Matt a book of cowboy poetry in Jackson when Holly and I went shopping the day the guys went out on the ATVs.  We also were entertained by your off-trail adventures with Snickers, but that's another story.  Anyway, we just wanted to contact you and let you know that even though we did many really fun things on our trip, your trail ride was the big highlight of our time out there, something we will all remember forever and hope to do again sometime.  If you are ever again in the Fremont area and want to break up your trip, e-mail us ahead of time or call us and you are more than welcome to stop in for a meal or stay the night before you go on your way.  Ron will give you a tour of the Children's Home and farm area.
Thanks again to you and Josh for a great time! God bless--  Ron, Teresa, Matt, Holly and Joe Giesselmann

Phil from New York:  Phil has ridden with Jonesy before, in the early spring to help clear trails.  This year, in 2008, Phil and his two friends came in late May and had a great time.  They were first on the trail this year and we cut logs out of the trail and waded through snowdrifts.  Phil got to ride his favorite horse, Ranger, which is Jonesy's main guide horse.

Sutherland family:  The Sutherlands came and had a great time in the snow!  It was June 11 and a huge snowstorm.  They were from Florida and had a great time in the snow.  Five year old Logan even built a snowman.

Brock Family:  Colleen took the Brock family on a ride on June 13.  Had a great time!

Hazlik Family:  Jonesy had a great ride with Don, Belena, and Dillon Hazlik.  Dillon is only 7 years old and had never been on a horse, but he took to it like a duck to water.  He just endured the rest stops until we could get on the horses again.  At the end of the ride he just had to ride down the road with Dad ahead of the truck and trailer.

David and Daryl Nelms:  Had a great ride with Colleen on June 19.  Rode into the high country and saw some great scenery.  Great folks to ride with.  Colleen had a great time and so did they.  David is the CEO of Discover Card.

Phillips Family from Ohio:  All 19 of them had a great ride in spectacular scenery!  Even little Kevin had a good time but was worn out at the end of the trip (as proven by the picture of him curled up in the back seat of the pickup in Jonesy's cowboy hat).

Jim & Anita Newmann, July 7, 2008  "This is officially the best horse ride I've ever been on."
